Kauai, Hawaii HD tour – “Shards from Heaven” by helicopter, raft, and kayak

Explore beautiful Kauai, Hawaii in HD by helicopter, ocean raft, and kayak. NEW! See my video on Kyoto, JAPAN in HD! www.youtube.com Filmed on the island of Kauai over 9 days. This video gives a brief tour of the island and its adventures and sights. I’d imagine it’d be interesting for people who want a quick overview of what Kauai is like. Photographs here www.flickrwire.com Scenes include the Napali Coast, the Kalalau trail, Hanakapi’ai Falls, the Waiahuakua sea cave, the open ceiling cave, Ho’olulu Sea Cave, the Wailua River, the Secret Waterfall, and Mount Waialeale crater (the wettest place on earth). For the shots, we went kayaking, boating on the Napali Coast for sea caves, and took a helicopter ride into the Waialaelae crater. It’s estimated as much as 75% of Kauai is inaccessible due to forests. Thanks to Napali Riders for the boat, Mauna Loa helicopters, and Wailua Kayak and Canoe. Filmed by Patrick Shyu, starring Henrick Shyu. Music by Garnet Crow. Recorded on a Canon S95, stabilized with Mercalli v2, edited in Premiere.

Kilauea Volcano Erupts – Dramatic Video

Kilauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Topographically Kilauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kilauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kilauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth. Hawaiian Meaning The Hawaiian name “Kilauea” means “spewing” or “much spreading,” apparently in reference to the lava flows that it erupts. Eruptions have been Continuous since January 3, 1983. It is estimated that the first eruption of Kilauea has between 300000 and 600000 years ago.

Pele’s Appeal

In the swirling volcanic steam and misty rain forest of Kilauea volcano’s east rift zone on the island of Hawai’i, two forces meet head on. Geothermal development interests, seeking to clear the rain forest for drilling operations, are opposed by native Hawaiians seeking to stop the desecration of the fire goddess, Pele. Pele is a living deity fundamental to Hawaiian spiritual belief. She is the eruption, with its heat, lava and steam. Her family takes the form of forest plants, animals and other natural forces. But geothermal development interests see Pele as simply a source of electricity. When Hawaiians take the issue to court, they find that nature-based religions are not respected by US law. Adding to the issue are environmental concerns over the threat to native species of plants and birds in an island group that is the world capitol for extinct and endangered species. The fact that the geothermal wells are situated on one of the most geologically unstable areas of the planet leads to safety concerns for the surrounding residential communities. Thus the stage is set for one of the most controversial issues ever to rock Hawai’i, an eruption exceeded only by that of Pele, who has been dancing on the east rift zone since the controversy began in 1983. Produced for the Pele Defense Fund as an appeal for help to stop geothermal test drilling in the Wao Kele o Puna rain forest.
