More than a hotel, the Royal Hawaiian is a legend. It
was opened in 1927 and became an instant hit with high
society, the wealthy and the famous. From Shirley Temple
to Joe DiMaggio, celebrities almost always stayed there.
Matson Navigation built the hotel to accommodate its luxury
cruise passengers and within a few short years, the hotel
became the most celebrated landmark on Waikiki
beach. With its unique blend of Moorish-Spanish design,
soaring turrets and pink stucco, the hotel is considered
the Grande Dame of Waikiki.
The Royal Hawaiian has just finished
a $9 million rejuvenation with all Royal
Tower rooms and public areas
completely refurbished from wall coverings, tiles, lights,
furniture, carpeting and bathroom. All the oceanfront Tower rooms and the Historic
Wing feature the Sheraton "Sweet Sleeper Bed",
13-inch pillow top mattresses, triple sheeting and down
pillows. Both old world luxury and modern comfort can
be found in both sections of the hotel with the Royal
Tower featuring intimate lanais for wonderful views, coffee/tea
makers and contemporary dcor.
The Historic Wing features elegant furnishings including
four-poster beds and Queen Anne-style writing desks. Amenities
in both include high speed wireless internet access (fee),
cable satellite TV, premium channels, air conditioning,
voice mail, compact refrigerators, complimentary toiletries,
hair dryer, luxurious pink bathrobes, hair dryer, clock
radio and much more.
There are three places for dining, including the casual
Mai Tai Bar with wonderful views of Diamond
Head and the ocean, featuring tropical drinks and hot
and cold appetizers and the casual Royal Hawaiian Beach
Club featuring light menus of American fare and simple
island cuisine.
For fine dining there is the Surf Room, an oceanfront
restaurant featuring a showcase of continental classics
and contemporary Hawaiian cuisine, fresh from the islands.
As a Sheraton guest you also can take advantage of their
"Stay at One Hotel, Play At All", where you
can dine at their sister properties, Sheraton Waikiki,
Sheraton Princess Kaiulani and the Sheraton Moana
and charge it back to your room.
The 12-acre beachfront property is filled with lush gardens
and tropical trees to wander in and many property amenities,
including an oceanside swimming
pool with the shallow end roped off for children and food
and beverage service available. There is also a roped
off area on the beach fronting the hotel with attendants
who set up lounge chairs, beach umbrellas and towels.
There is entertainment nightly at the Mai Tai Bar and
the hotel features a wonderful Luau every Monday night
on the Ocean Lawn.
Other amenities include a flower lei
upon arrival, arrival amenity of banana nut bread, 24
hour room service, Hospitality Suite for early arrivals
and late departures, Valet parking, 20 gift and specialty
