Kona Seaside
Located in the heart of the Big Island's sunny west side, the 2.5 star Kona Seaside Hotel is a Hawaiian-owned oceanfront property offering affordable accommodations with many amenities. There are three wings of three stories and one five story tower. The hotel is an older property and renovations on the rooms are continuing to take place. The property is beautifully maintained with 5 acres of lush gardens and even a small shopping center next door.
The air conditioned rooms are spacious with views of the gardens, ocean or town of Kailua-Kona, with most rooms including lanais or patios. With a tropical island décor, amenities include Cable TV, AM/FM clock radio, mini-refrigerator, hair dryers, ceiling fan, direct dial phone and more.
There are two restaurants, including Kona Fish & Chips, open from 6 am to 9 pm daily. Located poolside, this casual restaurant serves fresh seafood during the dinner hours. The Paleo Bar & Grill is located in the Kona Seaside Shopping Mall, next to the hotel and is open daily for lunch and dinner to 10 pm, specializing in American, seafood and Continental cuisine. A child friendly, affordable restaurant, there is both indoor and outdoor seating and the Happy Hour is considered one of the best deals in town.
There are two large swimming pools with very spacious decks to relax on and watch all the activity of the harbor. There is a 24-hour desk, parking (fee), safe deposit box at front desk (fee) and laundry/valet services. The pier is only about 100 yards away, where you can sign up for a deep sea fishing cruise, or a dinner sail or whatever water sport interests you. The bustling town of Kailua-Kona is within walking distance with a great variety of shops and restaurants as well as the nightlife of the island. Just 50 yards from the hotel is a sand beach with lagoon, great snorkeling is near, as well as championship golf courses.
This is an older, moderately priced hotel, but it does offer something some of the newer hotels might not – authentic Hawaiian aloha spirit and a friendly staff – they are noted for it. It has a great location for exploring all of the Big Island with its different ecosystems. From the overflowing lava going into the ocean, to the ranchlands in Waimea to the rain forests and the lava fields of Kona, it is an island worth visiting.
