Hawaii Volcano Air Tours: Kiluea Volcano Summit 2007 magma chamber degassing vent

Descending to the east out of the “saddle” from between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa we were able to catch a great view of the Kiluea cauldera and Halemaumau crater within smoking or degassing the magma chambers just below the surface. From here the lava travels under ground 10 mi. east to the Puu Oo eruption area that has been erupting at the surface since 1983 with little sign of slowing down! This was taken with a cell phone… in airplane mode 🙂 My name is Buster and I am a Hawaii air tour pilot, interisland charter flight, and flight instructor pilot based at the Kona International Airport in Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.
