Hawaii Volcano Air Tours: Kiluea Volcano Summit 2007 magma chamber degassing vent

Descending to the east out of the “saddle” from between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa we were able to catch a great view of the Kiluea cauldera and Halemaumau crater within smoking or degassing the magma chambers just below the surface. From here the lava travels under ground 10 mi. east to the Puu Oo eruption area that has been erupting at the surface since 1983 with little sign of slowing down! Unlike most other birds (but see flamingo), the doves and pigeons produce “crop milk”, which is secreted by a sloughing of fluid-filled cells from the lining of the crop. Both sexes produce this highly nutritious substance to feed to the young. Pigeons and doves exhibit considerable variations in size. The largest species are the crowned
