Kapa Demonstration at Makeke Kapolei, July 5, 2012

My long time friend, kumu kapa Ka’iulani de Silva, demonstrated the Hawaiian traditional art of kapa (bark cloth) making, explaining the plants and tools used, how the fiber is prepared and beaten, and printing with ‘ohe ka pala (bamboo stamps). Kapa was an integral part of every part of life in ancient Hawai’i, for birth, marriage, daily apparel, and burial. We are very fortunate that the Malama Learning Center is bringing these cultural presentations to us at our makeke/farmers market. I hope that you continue to learn a little more about our culture through these video snippets. Thumbs up for that! You will see just how sensitive my mic is on my camera, as it will pick up Ka’iu perfectly from approximately 10-15 feet away. Now you know why you can hear me breathing (lol)
